Gilles Villeneuve (CDN) Ferrari Ferrari 312T3 leads the original start of the race from pole sitter Mario Andretti (USA) Lotus 79. His team mate Ronnie Peterson (SWE) Lotus 78 had made a poor start from third position, a factor that led to the triggering of a horrific multi-car accident on the run to the first chicane that tragically claimed the life of Peterson.
