Mario Andretti waits to get into his Lotus 79 Ford in the pitlane.
The immediate aftermath of the multi-car accident at the start of the race: Ronnie Peterson (SWE) Lotus (Yellow overalls) lies in the track having been pulled from his shattered, burning, Lotus 78, and is tended to by marshals, Clay Regazzoni (SUI) Ensign (Red Overalls) and James Hunt (GBR) McLaren (Black helmet). Patrick Depailler (FRA) Tyrrell (Blue helmet) walks away from Peterson. Marshalls attend the stricken Vittorio Brambilla (ITA) (Right), who is stuck in his Surtees TS20 after suffering a serious head injury from which he fully recovered. Bruno Giacomelli (ITA) stands behind his undamaged McLaren M26 and Derek Daly (IRE) Ensign (Blue overalls) runs back through the accident scene to his car. Tragically, Peterson would die from a blood clot following an operation in hospital on his badly broken legs.
