Gerhard Berger (Ferrari 412T2) 4th position, on the grid before the start. He wore a different crash helmet as part of a competition run by a newspaper in Italy. The winning design was called "No war in the World". Berger was only supposed to wear it on Friday, but he liked it so much that he wore it all weekend.

As they entered the bottleneck of Ste. Devote with wheels interlocking, David Coulthard (Williams FW17 Renault) and Jean Alesi (Ferrari 412T2) made contact first. Coulthard was launched into the air by his rear right wheel. Gerhard Berger (Ferrari 412T2) to Coulthard's left was then collected as well, action.
