Jacques Laffite (FRA) debuted the Ligier JS5, complete with giant 'teapot' air intake. The French team, derived from the remnants of Matra, performed respectably on their GP debut, with Laffite qualifying eleventh, but retiring on lap 15 with a broken gear linkage.
