Patrick Depailler (Tyrrell 008 Ford) leads Ronnie Peterson (Lotus 79 Ford), Jacques Laffite (Ligier JS9 Matra), Niki Lauda (Brabham BT46 Ford) and Didier Pironi (Tyrrell 008 Ford) on the second start. The original race was stopped after 7 laps because everyone had started on slicks when it was only slightly wet.

Riccardo Patrese (ITA) raced the Arrows A1 for the first time following a court decision that ruled the FA1 infringed copyright after sharing numerous similarities to the Shadow DN9. Patrese crashed out of the race on lap seven.
