Formula 1 Images : Spanish GP (1969)
Jochen Rindt rests against an Armco barrier.
Jochen Rindt (AUT), Lotus Cosworth 49B, was leading the race by a huge margin when he suffered a rear wing failure at over 160 mph. Rindt only suffered a broken nose and cut face despite the car finishing up on top of him. The cause of the crash was due to the size of the rear wing creating too much downforce for the rear struts to cope with.
