Mark Donohue (USA) Penske Racing Cars March 751, suffered a massive crash following a tyre failure at the Hella Licht Curve during practice. Although initially conscious, Donohue tragically died on the Tuesday following the race with a brain haemorrhage, and a marshal was killed too at the scene of the accident.

The remains of the Penske March 751 of Mark Donohue (USA) after he crashed heavily at the Hella Licht during the Sunday morning warm-up session are cleared away. Tragically a marshall was killed from the flying debris and Donohue suffered a brain haemorrhage which led to his tragic death two days later.
