Gilles Villeneuve (CDN) stunned the F1 fraternity on his GP debut when he qualified his McLaren M23 in ninth place. He would have finished in the points but for a faulty water temperature gauge that cost him a two-lap stay in the pits. He finished eleventh in what would be his only race for McLaren.

Carlos Reutemann (ARG) Ferrari 312T2 recovers onto the circuit having been hit by Jochen Mass (GER) McLaren approaching the new loop on the opening lap of the race. Reutemann recovered through the field to take sixth position by the finish.

On the left Clay Regazzoni's Ensign N177 Ford is mounted by Vittorio Brambilla's Surtees TS19 Ford, which was involved in a collision with Jochen Mass's McLaren, all resulting from the fracas caused by Reutemann's lock-up just prior to this in the same corner.
