The shocking remains of the Hill GH1 of Rolf Stommelen (GER) are removed following his massive accident, triggered by a broken rear wing whilst leading the race on lap 26, that sent him clear of the barrier and tragically killed five spectators. Stommelen himself suffered very serious injuries and the race became the first to be stopped and declared a ÔhalfÕ Grand Prix: as less than two-thirds distance had been completed.

The Tyrrell team on the Friday of the meeting took it upon themselves to begin repairing the large sections of guardrail that hadnÕt been properly bolted together. The driversÕ had refused to compete until the work was carried out; three drivers subsequently pulled out of the race as a protest.
