Nigel Mansell glanced poleman Nelson Piquet's (Brabham BT53 BMW) quite heavily, causing him to crash at the start. Here Marc Surer (Arrows A6 Ford) runs out of room and ends up alongside Piquet. The race was immediately red flagged.

Patrick Depailler (FRA) (Centre) climbs from his Tyrrell 007/2 after being T-boned by Jacky Ickx (BEL) Lotus 76 (Right) on lap 43 following a spin. Ironically Depailler came to rest a few yards from team mate Jody Scheckter (RSA) Tyrrell 007 (Left), who blew his engine on lap nine.
