Nelson Piquet (BRA) took pole position in the Brabham BT49C rumoured to be running a hydro-pneumatic suspension designed to circumnavigate the rule that cars had to be 6cm above the ground when measured. Nelson finished the race twelfth after a misguided choice to run slicks on a wet track.

Bruno Giacomelli (ITA), Alfa Romeo 179C, suffered an electrical problem in warm-up which then re-occurred during the race. After five pit stops and the fitting of a new coil he finished too far behind to be classified.
