As the front runners make it to the Rettifilo chicane at the start of the race, a thick black plume of smoke obscures the circuit as a multi-car accident decimates much of the field. Vittorio Brambilla (ITA) Surtees was badly injured and tragically Ronnie Peterson (SWE) Lotus died as a result of the injuries sustained.
