Ken Tyrrell (GBR) Tyrrell Team Owner on the Friday of the meeting took it upon himself to begin repairing the large sections of guardrail that hadn't been properly bolted together. The drivers had refused to compete until the work was carried out; three drivers subsequently pulled out of the race as a protest.

The remains of the Hill GH1 of Rolf Stommelen (GER) sit on the wrong side of the Armco following his massive accident - triggered by a broken rear wing whilst leading the race on lap 26, that sent him clear of the barrier and tragically killed five spectators.
