Cancelled in 1988, the Birmingham Street race did take place in 1989. Frank Sytner, BMW M3 leads the pack.
Helmeted Nelson Piquet (BRA) informs the media of the drivers unwillingness to race in the terrible conditions. However when the race started, only Alain Prost (FRA) (Centre) made the brave decision to withdraw. Piquet raced and was lucky to survive a terrifying crash.

Race winner Allan McNish (GBR) West Surrey Racing Ralt RT33 Mugen leads Paul Stewart (GBR) Reynard 893 Mugen. The win was provisionally enough to win the championship, but it was subsequently lost on appeal. British Formula Three Championship, Thruxton, England, 15 October 1989.

Nigel Mansell (GBR) Ferrari 640, became the first driver to win on their debut for Ferrari since Mario Andretti (USA) in 1981. It was also the first race to be won by a Formula One car fitted with a semi-automatic gearbox.
