Ayrton Senna (BRA) Lotus 97T claimed pole by an impressive 1.2 seconds. In the race however a poor tyre choice necessitated two stops and the resulting charge lead to an accident, bought about by failing brakes.

Ayrton Senna (BRA) (Left) landed himself in trouble with his Toleman Team when Lotus Team Manager Peter Warr (Right) announced they had a contract for his services for the following season. The dispute continued to an extent that Toleman dropped Senna from the following Grand Prix.
