Nelson Piquet (BRA) Brabham drives the van full of F1 drivers to inspect the crumbling track. Sitting along side is Elio De Angelis (ITA) Lotus and Derek Warwick (GBR) Renault. The running of the Grand Prix was postponed until later in the year.

Jacky Ickx (BEL) Lotus 72, who was not a member of the GPDA, was the first driver to break ranks and practice on Friday, as others went on strike in protest of the condition of the guardrails. Ickx went on to finish second in the shortened race.

The shocking remains of the Hill GH1 of Rolf Stommelen (GER) are removed following his massive accident, triggered by a broken rear wing whilst leading the race on lap 26, that sent him clear of the barrier and tragically killed five spectators. Stommelen himself suffered very serious injuries and the race became the first to be stopped and declared a ÔhalfÕ Grand Prix: as less than two-thirds distance had been completed.

(L to R): Graham Hill (GBR) Hill Team Owner, as a GPDA representative, explains from the back of the McLaren motorhome on the Friday of the meeting, the drivers decision to strike over the poor condition of the guardrail lining the street circuit. Niki Lauda (AUT) Ferrari crashed out on the opening lap of the race and Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) McLaren refused to take part in the meeting and headed home.

Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) McLaren explains his decision to withdraw from the GP meeting during practice due to the slapdash construction of the barriers around the circuit. Tragically his fears would be realised when five spectators were killed in an accident during the race.
