It took over half an hour to free Ian Ashley (GBR) (Being placed into the ambulance) from the wreckage of his Hesketh 308E that somersaulted and hit a television tower during practice. Despite losing his helmet from the violence of the crash he suffered 'just' broken ankles and wrists.

Loris Kessel (SUI) made his final GP appearance trying to qualify the Jolly Club of Switzerland Apollon / Williams FW03 / Iso IR3. The four-year old car was well off the pace and was crashed beyond repair during qualifying, never to be seen again.
