Jacky Ickx (BEL) Lotus, who was not a member of the GPDA, was the first driver to break ranks and practice on Friday, as others went on strike in protest of the condition of the guardrails. Ickx went on to finish second in the shortened race.

The shocking remains of the Hill GH1 of Rolf Stommelen (GER) are removed following his massive accident, triggered by a broken rear wing whilst leading the race on lap 26, that sent him clear of the barrier and tragically killed five spectators. Stommelen himself suffered very serious injuries and the race became the first to be stopped and declared a ÔhalfÕ Grand Prix: as less than two-thirds distance had been completed.

Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) McLaren explains his decision to withdraw from the GP meeting during practice due to the slapdash construction of the barriers around the circuit. Tragically his fears would be realised when five spectators were killed in an accident during the race.
