Poleman Gerhard Berger leads teammate Ayrton Senna (both McLaren MP4/6 Honda's), Nigel Mansell, Riccardo Patrese (both Williams FW14 Renault's), Alain Prost, Jean Alesi (both Ferrari 643's), Pierluigi Martini (Minardi M191 Ferrari), Michael Schumacher (Benetton B191 Ford) and Gianni Morbidelli (Minardi M191 Ferrari) at the start.

Nigel Mansell (Williams FW14 Renault) retires from the race as he runs over the kerb and spins off at First Curve. He had been right behind Senna into First Curve, when he lost downforce, sending him wide and into the gravel. His brakes had also given him a problem most of the weekend. Ayrton Senna (McLaren MP4/6 Honda) continued to take 2nd position.
