The first instance of a pace car during an F1 GP caused mass confusion as it came out ahead of the wrong car: Howden Ganley (NZL) ISO Williams IR, and the lap charts of officials and teams accordingly fell apart. The proper result of the race is still debated to this day.

Fourth placed Jean-Pierre Beltoise (FRA) BRM P160E, third placed Jackie Oliver (GBR) Shadow DN1 and second placed Lotus 72D unwittingly battle for second position in the confusion ridden final laps of the race.

Colin Chapman (GBR) Lotus Team Owner celebrates what he thought was Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) Lotus 72D winning the GP. The chequered flag had not been waved at Emerson however and he was subsequently declared to have finished second.

Colin Chapman (GBR) Lotus Team Owner and the Lotus team manage to see the funny side as they had just celebrated Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) Lotus winning the GP, only to realize that the chequered flag had not been waved to their driver.

The scoreboard gave an incorrect final result caused by the lap chart confusion following the pace car period: It gave the order as: Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) Lotus, race winner; Howden Ganley (NZL) ISO Williams, second; and Peter Revson (USA) McLaren third.

The podium proved to be controversial as all three believed they had won the race due to confusion during the pace car period (L to R): Jackie Oliver (GBR) Shadow finished third; Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) Lotus finished second; Peter Revson (USA) McLaren took the spoils as race winner.
