The remains of Gilles Villeneuve's totally destroyed Ferrari 126C2 chassis, after his fatal accident during practise. Marshals surround Gilles behind who was thrown from the car, recieving terrible injuries. Jochen Mass, who's car Gilles had touched causing him to crash stands in the middle, obviously wise to the bad news.

Jean-Pierre Jarier (ATS/Penske PC4 Ford) and Patrick Depailler (Tyrrell P34 Ford) at Cooks Corner on the first lap. On the left Clay Regazzoni's Ensign N177 Ford is mounted by Vittorio Brambilla's Surtees TS19 Ford, which was involved in a collision with Jochen Mass's McLaren, all resulting from the fracas caused by Reutemann's lock-up just prior to this in the same corner.
