Gilles Villeneuve (CDN) McLaren, qualified an excellent ninth on his GP debut. He finished eleventh in his only race for McLaren, but would have finished in the points save for a faulty water temperature gauge that cost him a two-lap stay in the pits.

A Gordini turbocharger is replaced during Thursday practice on the Renault RS01 of Jean-Pierre Jabouille (FRA). It was the debut appearance in F1 for Renault, a turbocharged engine (a 1.5 litre V6) and for tyre manufacturer Michelin. It was an inauspicious beginning with Jabouille qualifying twenty-fourth and retiring on lap seventeen with a blown turbo.
