Colin Chapman (GBR) Lotus Team Owner and the Lotus team hold out a pit board for Mario Andretti (USA) Lotus, who had enjoyed a lap's lead over nearest rival Jody Scheckter (RSA) Wolf. Mario retired just two laps from the end of the race with a blown engine.

Marshals take a look at the wreckage and here the detached engine of the Hesketh 308E engine of Ian Ashley (GBR). His car somersaulted and hit a television tower during practice. Despite losing his helmet from the violence of the crash he suffered 'just' broken ankles and wrists.
