It took over half an hour to free Ian Ashley (GBR) from the wreckage of his Hesketh 308E that somersaulted and hit a television tower (In picture) during practice. Despite losing his helmet from the violence of the crash he suffered 'just' broken ankles and wrists.

Fittipaldi mechanics take a look at the damage of the new Copersucar-Fittipaldi F5 after Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) crashed during practice when the nearside rear wheel fell off, damaging the monocoque too badly for it to be raced. Emerson finished eighteenth in the old FD04.

A truck rushes to assist a marshal extinguishing the Ensign N176 of Jacky Ickx (BEL), which crashed heavily on lap 15 and caught fire. Ickx escaped relatively lightly with a broken ankle and minor burns.

Mark Donohue (USA) Penske Racing Cars March 751, suffered a massive crash following a tyre failure at the Hella Licht Curve during practice. Although initially conscious, Donohue tragically died on the Tuesday following the race with a brain haemorrhage, and a marshal was killed too at the scene of the accident.
