Leader on the road Mario Andretti (USA) Lotus 79 was classified sixth after being docked a minute for jumping the start. He was crowned World Champion but this palled into insignificance following the fatal accident of team mate Ronnie Peterson (SWE) at the start of the race.

Rupert Keegan (GBR) Surtees, runs back to the pits with his car seat after stopping at the end of the pit lane during practice. He failed to qualify for the race. Bernie Ecclestone (GBR) Brabham Team Owner watched on from the pit wall.

The controversial Brabham BT46B fan car which won the race in the hands of Niki Lauda (AUT), had its fan covered by a bin lid whilst in the pits. The device was not used again whilst the victory was allowed to stand after an appeal.
