Nelson Piquet (BRA) took pole position in the Brabham BT49C rumoured to be running a hydro-pneumatic suspension designed to circumnavigate the rule that cars had to be 6cm above the ground when measured. Nelson finished the race twelfth after a misguided choice to run slicks on a wet track.
