Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari F2001) lost his front wing after hitting some cones at the bus stop chicane. It meant that he did an entire lap at reduced speed, but he managed to salvage 5th position by the end.

A locking up Ralf Schumacher (Williams FW23 BMW) leads Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello (both Ferrari F2001's) and Giancarlo Fisichella (Benetton B201 Renault) after the second start, but only briefly as the race would be stopped due to the Burti accident.

The first start of the race is aborted due to the stalled engine of Heinz-Harald Frentzen's Prost, caused by a gearbox refusing to select first gear. He was 4th on the grid behind poleman Juan-Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher (both Williams FW23 BMW's) and Michael Schumacher (Ferrari F2001).

Luciano Burti's Prost AP04 chassis after his horrifying accident at Blanchimont, where he tried to pass Irvine and went straight into the tyre wall at nearly 180mph. The tub stood up extremely well considering the enormity of his frontal impact, as can be seen. Because of this he sustained no serious injury.
