Jean-Pierre Jarier (ATS/Penske PC4 Ford) and Patrick Depailler (Tyrrell P34 Ford) at Cooks Corner on the first lap. On the left Clay Regazzoni's Ensign N177 Ford is mounted by Vittorio Brambilla's Surtees TS19 Ford, which was involved in a collision with Jochen Mass's McLaren, all resulting from the fracas caused by Reutemann's lock-up just prior to this in the same corner.

Tom Pryce (GBR) Shadow DN8 (Standing to the left of cockpit) during practice) suffered a tragic fatal accident on lap 23 when he hit the fire extinguisher of marshal Jansen van Vuuren at full speed on the main straight and was killed instantly.
