Mario Andretti (USA) Lotuxs 77 leads race winner and pole sitter Jody Scheckter (RSA) Tyrrell P34 into the first corner at the start of the race. However, Andretti was penalised one minute for jumping the start, and retired whilst trying to make up the deficit on lap 46 with a blown engine.
