First semi-final winner Jonathan Bancroft (GBR) Van Diemen (right) takes the lead at the start. Bertrand Gachot (BEL) Van Dieman (centre) was to suffer a massive accident moments later and pole sitter Paulo Carcasci (ITA) Van Diemen (left) was forced to take avoiding action and retired on the spot.
