Rolf Stommelen (GER) Hill GH1 was leading the race when his rear wing broke on lap 26 Ð triggering a massive accident that sent him clear of the barrier and tragically killed five spectators. Stommelen himself suffered very serious injuries and the race became the first to be stopped and declared a ÔhalfÕ Grand Prix: as less than two-thirds distance had been completed.
