Team mates Gerhard Berger (AUT), Ferrari 412T2, and Jean Alesi (FRA), Ferrari 412T2, collide at the start of the race whilst David Coulthard (GBR), Williams FW17, faces the on-coming traffic. The rest of the field led by Heinz-Harald Frentzen (GER), Sauber C14, drive around. The race was red flagged and restarted due to this accident.
