Jackie Stewart (GBR) Tyrrell 006/2 scored a record-breaking twenty-sixth victory, albeit in tragic circumstances that overshadowed the achievement.

Roger Williamson (GBR) March 731. Williamson was killed on the eighth lap of the race, when a suspension or tyre failure sent his car into the guardrail, tipping the car upside down and catching fire. David Purley (GBR) March stopped at the scene and tried to rescue Williamson, but the intensity of the blaze and the lack of Marshal assistance made it a futile effort. Purley later received the British George Cross Medal for his bravery.
