As Jody Scheckter's Wolf exits Cooks Corner on the first lap, Carlos Reutemann (Ferrari 312T2) locks up under braking and goes straight-on. This caused a fracas behind as Niki Lauda (Ferrari 312T2) and Mario Andretti (Lotus 78 Ford) lift off completely to tuck inside, resulting in a chain reaction of collisions behind.
