Karl Wendlinger (Sauber C13 Mercedes). He had an accident during Thursday mornings free practice. He lost control under braking into the Nouvelle Chicane, whereby his car slid sideways into the armco barrier. At the point of impact he hit his head on the water filled padding that protects the end of the barrier. He was unconscious when the car came to rest. He later regained consciousness, but the doctors put him back into a medically induced coma. He would wake up three weeks later.
