Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA) Lotus 72D comes to an immediate halt after colliding with race leader Jody Scheckter (RSA) McLaren M23 on lap 42. Scheckter retired on the following lap with suspension damage caused by the collision.

Mark Donohue (USA) Penske Racing Cars March 751, suffered a massive crash following a tyre failure at the Hella Licht Curve during practice. Although initially conscious, Donohue tragically died on the Tuesday following the race with a brain haemorrhage, and a marshal was killed too at the scene of the accident.
