Nigel Mansell (Williams FW14 Renault) retires from the race as he runs over the kerb and spins off at First Curve. He had been right behind Senna into First Curve, when he lost downforce, sending him wide and into the gravel. His brakes had also given him a problem most of the weekend. Ayrton Senna (McLaren MP4/6 Honda) continued to take 2nd position.

Race winner Gerhard Berger (AUT) took the top step of the podium thanks to an agreement between Ayrton Senna (AUT) and the McLaren team that allowed Gerhard to pass Ayrton on the final lap. It was his first win for McLaren after nearly two seasons racing for them.
