Bruce McLaren (McLaren M14A Ford) and Mario Andretti (March 701 Ford) drive past the flame engulfed cars of Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver, after their first lap crash at Bugatti. Oliver's front left stub axle failed and the wheel flew off under braking into the corner, he then crashed straight into the back of ickx's car. Both cars were heavilly fuelled and due to the incompetence of the marshals the fires burned away for more than an hour. They also unsuccessfully tried to remove Oliver's car off the track with a trolley jack. Both drivers escaped serious injury.
