Spanish police stand behind a shocking example of the poorly erected crash barriers lining the circuit. The drivers refused to compete until improvements were carried out; three drivers subsequently pulled out of the race as a protest.

Jacky Ickx (BEL) Lotus 72E, who was not a member of the GPDA, was the only major player to practice on Friday, as others went on strike in protest of the condition of the guardrails. Ickx went on to finish second in the shortened race.

Mark Donohue (USA) Penske Racing Cars March 751 suffered a massive crash following a tyre failure at the Hella Licht Curve during practice. Although initially conscious, Donohue tragically died on the Tuesday following the race with a brain haemorrhage, and a marshal was killed too at the scene of the accident.

Lella Lombardi (ITA) Lavazza March 751 finished sixth in her second GP and became the first female to score a top six finish in a Grand Prix; albeit scoring just half a championship point, as the race was the first to be declared a result at less than two-thirds distance.
