Nelson Piquet (BRA) Brabham BT52B (Right) heads into the tyre barrier at Tarzan after being hit by Alain Prost (FRA) Renault RE40 (Left) on lap 42 when Alain lost control whilst trying to overtake him. Piquet retired on the spot, Prost crashed out later that lap having suffered damage to the front wing.

Carlos Reutemann (ARG), Williams FW07C, attempts to overtake Jacques Laffite (FRA), Ligier JS17, on lap 18. Reutemann then crashed into the side of Laffite briefly launching him into the air and then into the catch-fencing. Reutemann retired with broken suspension.

Jody Scheckter (RSA) Tyrrell 007, who started fourth on the grid, made a great start to lead the race in the wet conditions. However Scheckter dropped from third to sixteenth and last position when he blew his engine on the sixty-eighth lap.

Chris Amon (NZL) Tecno PA123A passes the March 731 of Roger Williamson (GBR) burning uncontrollably following his crash on the eighth lap that would see him perish through asphyxiation, despite the efforts of David Purley (GBR) Lec, who earned the George Medal for his outstanding bravery.
