Carlos Reutemann (ARG), Williams FW07C, attempts to overtake Jacques Laffite (FRA), Ligier JS17, on lap 18. Reutemann then crashed into the side of Laffite briefly launching him into the air and then into the catch-fencing. Reutemann retired with broken suspension.

Third placed Alan Jones (AUS), Williams, boycotted the podium as Jean-Marie Belastre (FRA), FISA President, was present. Jones was still angry after the Spanish Grand Prix results, and therefore his win, were declared void by the FIA and FISA after the race was found to be illegal. This was a result of the ongoing FOCA/FISA war. Balestre is pictured far right.
